Location: Houston, TX

Third Pillar Solar is seeking a Marine Structural and Geotechnical Engineer to join our dynamic and growing team.  The Marine Structural and Geotechnical Engineer is responsible for the civil and structural aspects of technical design and development of Third Pillar Solar’s floating PV (FPV) solar projects on inland water bodies across North America.  This position provides a unique opportunity to join a small, experienced group of professionals focused on a rapidly growing sector within the clean energy industry.

This role reports to the Chief Technical Officer of Third Pillar Solar LLC and will be part of the Technical department.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical deliverables to support the civil and structural design and development of floating solar projects, including
    • Preliminary floating system design and optimization based on the technical characteristics of the water body
    • Supervising and reviewing third-party mooring and structural analyses
    • Leading geotechnical and geophysical surveys of water bodies, including bathymetry, geotechnical investigations, and water quality studies
    • Creating and collaborating on conceptual project site layouts
    • Preliminary engineering to support permitting, interconnection and procurement
    • Technical input to project development and construction schedules
    • Project cost estimates, including upfront Capex and long-term Opex assumptions
  • Lead the development of contractual scope documents for various project delivery methods including drawings, specifications, basis of design, technical reports, technical memorandums, cost estimates, quantity take-offs, etc.
  • Serve as the technical resource for the project development team, developing solutions and handling technical challenges that arise during various phases of the project
  • Develop specifications for third-party engineering and service providers, and provide technical support to procurement of equipment and contractors
  • Evaluate technologies and manufacturers for anchoring and mooring structures for capital and operational efficiencies.  Research equipment forward price curves and emerging technologies
  • Coordinate with coastal, civil, mechanical, construction, inspection, permitting/environmental and other disciplines as required to deliver projects
  • Manage subconsultants and construction services throughout project lifecycles
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Keen, demonstrated interest in marine-based structural engineering and renewable energy
  • Strong technical expertise and ability to provide sound technical guidance
  • Ability to work in a project-type environment with tight deadlines and concurrent deliverables
  • Ability to learn, understand and communicate technical issues effectively to lay audiences
  • Ability to effectively manage contractors and consultants to achieve deadlines on budget
  • Ability to review technical designs, reports, and documentation, and perform analyses
  • Ability to travel to project sites as required

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural/Naval/Ocean Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 2 – 4 years of relevant experience in structural assessment, preferably with floating structures
  • Experience managing contractors and consultants
  • Knowledge of solar PV technology and design principles is a plus
  • Experience in engineering and/or construction of industrial projects is a plus
  • Experience working with suppliers of major equipment is a plus
